Confirm online payments with a Spend Cloud Card

Confirm online payments with a Spend Cloud Card

When you, as a cardholder, want to make an online payment with a Spend Cloud Card, it is necessary to confirm it through the Spend Cloud app. This is an additional security measure. You need to enable online payments in the app before you can make online transactions.

Alert
Previously, this functionality was called 3DS via SMS, which was sent to the phone number linked to the card. This continues to work until you link a phone to the card; the old method via SMS then becomes obsolete. This cannot be reversed for the respective card.

Enable confirming online payments through your app

Info
It is only possible to link one phone per card. In addition, only the user registered as the liable card owner can confirm the online payments of the card.

To set up online payment confirmation, go to the app and select Books from the menu at the bottom right. Open the book to which the card is linked and click on the Card Details button. If you have multiple cards, select the card for which you want to activate online payments. Tap the Start or Activate button in the notification you see. If you see the Start button, follow a few steps, including activating your card (if it's not yet activated), viewing your payment methods and limits, and enabling online payments. If you don't see any of these notifications, scroll down a bit and click on Payment Methods and Limits. Then click on Activate Online Payments on This Device.

 or    or                                                 and

Afterward, enter your phone's access code (note: this is not the access code for the app itself but for the phone). If enabled, you can also use your fingerprint or facial recognition here.

Alert
Attention! Do you see an error about your device not having an access code? Then you haven't set-up a passcode to unlock your phone (not the passcode from the Spend Cloud app itself). To be allowed to confirm online payments you must have set-up a passcode to unlock your device. You can read here to set this up for Apple or Android.

Once online payments are activated on your device, you will see the option to deactivate online payments under Payment Methods and Limits. If you see this notification, it means that online payments have been successfully activated on your device.

Notes
Don't see the text 'Activate online payments on this device' in your card details? Then contact an application manager within your organization. At the bottom of this article, there is more information on what can be checked if this text is not visible in the app.

How does confirming online payments via the app work?

When you make an online credit or debit card payment, the webshop checks, during the payment process, whether you are authorized to make the payment. Therefore, you need to confirm the payment through the Spend Cloud app on your phone. Currently, it is only possible to link one phone per card.

When you make the online payment, you need to confirm it through the Spend Cloud app before completing the transaction. When you open the app, you will see a pop-up screen that looks like this:

Confirm the payment here. Of course, only do this if you are indeed the person making the payment. Never confirm anything you are not aware of. After confirmation, this information is transmitted to the webshop, and your payment is finalized there.

Notes
Sometimes an online payment can be done without the need to confirm this. Webshops can decide whether they enforce 3DS and can apply their own rules, for example by not enforcing a confirmation with payments under €35.

When you don't receive notifications

It is important to check in the settings of your phone whether the Spend Cloud App is allowed to send notifications. To check this on an iPhone, read here. For settings on almost all other phones than an iPhone, look here.

In the Spend Cloud App, there is an option to test the push notifications. Go to settings and then to 'Diagnostics'. Click on 'Test push notifications' to check if the notifications are working. Click on 'Reconfigure push notifications' if the notifications are not working. Do you want to read more about this functionality and how to set-up push notifications on your device? Then read this article: configure and test pushnotifications in the Spend Cloud app.

If you are unable to get notifications to work, ask an application administrator within your organization or a colleague to assist you.

For application managers: if the employee does not see the button to activate online payments

If the employee does not see the button to activate online payments in the app, check the following items in Spend Cloud under the menu item Application Management / Cash and Card / Cards:

  1. Check if Online Payments is selected as a payment option for the card. Edit the card and ensure that 'Online Payments' is checked under payment methods. Is this the case? Then go to step 2.
  2. Check if a liable card owner is filled in. You can check this in the same screen as the online payments option. Enter the name of the employee here. Can't find the employee? Check the employee's role and ensure that 'Cardholder' is set to Yes.

  3. Check the linked devices. Online payments can be set up for one device only. When editing the card, choose 'Linked Devices' at the top of the screen. Is there already a device listed? Then online payments are configured for this device. Click on the trash can icon to remove this device.
